Credit Reporting and Credit Bureaus are used by agencies around the country for the scoring of portfolios. The scoring practice is used as a hedge to short discrepancies in a portfolio or more specifically to find unprofitable or potentially hazardous debtors.

Although Credit Bureaus are needed, the data gathered may or may not yield the type of information that you need to value a portfolio for its intended use. Also, scores for debtors can vary greatly from one bureau to another, leaving the collection agency to decide which result is the correct one for their company. Many agencies use everything from the "calibrated eyeball" to value a portfolio to home grown spreadsheets that add and subtract accounts to compute averages. This type of system is inconsistent and can cause portfolio buying anomalies which in turn cause any number of collection issues including portfolios that are overvalued. The ICE-scoring system allows you to view any portfolio and get an ICEscore^tm which is an aggregate weighted average of a portfolio based on statute, charge off date, last pay date, availability of address or phone numbers and hundreds of other parameters.

Many companies do not purchase portfolios based on aggregate numbers for any reason; they prefer to base purchases on very specific criteria.
